In July, Paula from our project partner Momentum, had the opportunity to chat to Sean Butler, a farmer in rural Roscommon, Ireland, about being a more responsible farmer. Sean is changing his practices to more regenerative ones and is following agroecological principles. He wants to undo the damage that has been done to the land over the generations at Hillside Holistic Farm. In this short interview we join Sean on his journey of discovery, learning and sharing.
Agriculture and food systems are facing wide-ranging and interlinked challenges that demand urgent actions. The 10 Elements of Agroecology have been internationally endorsed as a framework to support research and development efforts in the design of differentiated paths for agriculture and food systems transformation. The 10 Elements are interlinked and interdependent and represent a simplified, yet holistic, way to think about reality. They are a useful analytical tool to facilitate decision-making when planning, implementing, managing, and evaluating agroecological transitions by policymakers, practitioners and other stakeholders in differing contexts and at different scales. This video highlights Agroecology as an integrated approach that simultaneously applies ecological and social concepts and principles to the design and management of sustainable food and agricultural systems.
Upon arriving in Panama as a Peace Corps member Florence was committed to creating necessary and large scale change in the world. What she learned was that the answers to some of the world’s largest problems are often at the feet of the people on the ground – in this case the world’s small scale farmers. She shares her lessons learned and the opportunities that still lie ahead. Award-winning thought leader and innovative practitioner, Florence Reed, believes that when people work together, things can change for the better. After serving in the Peace Corps in Panama in the 1990s, Reed founded Sustainable Harvest International, a nonprofit organization that preserves the environment by partnering with farming families to increase well-being through sustainable farming. In recent years Reed has enjoyed being a delegate to the Opportunity Collaboration and Environmental Laureates Convention, as well as a member of advisory committees for the National Peace Corps Association and U.S. Global Leadership Coalition. This talk was given at a TEDx event using the TED conference format but independently organized by a local community.

Regenerative agriculture is an effective way to restore biodiversity and stabilize the climate, but what exactly is it? This video explores three different regenerative practices that have great potential both in food production and in healing the land.
What are nitrogen fixing plants, and why use them over nitrogen fertilizer? This video answers this question through an explanation of the nitrogen cycle.
Pressures on water resources are increasing unsustainably. Integrated Water Resources Management (IWRM) brings people from all sectors together to ensure that water resources are managed sustainably, fairly and efficiently. If we are to have any chance of achieving a world in balance by 2030, we need to double the rate at which we are putting IWRM into practice.
Variable Rate Irrigation (VRI) from Valley Irrigation may be the best solution for you and your operation. Precision farming has enabled growers to implement greater control over their operation. So, it makes sense that precise irrigation can quickly yield results. Watch this video to find out if Variable Rate Irrigation (VRI) is a good solution for your farming operation.

Produrre cibo naturale, fresco e biologico, utilizzando poca energia è possibile.
Agronomist, Phytogenetist, Associate Professor of genetic breeding at Faculty of Agricolture of the University of Perugia until 1987, Salvatore Ceccarelli has designed and implemented a method called evolutive plant breeding that puts control over seeds back into the farmers’ hands.
In the world of organic farming, there is no one quite like Mirosław Angielczyk. Raised in one of the poorest regions of Podlasian Poland in the 1960s and 1970s, Mirosław grew up in a family where collecting herbs was one of the few ways to support the family, in a place where doctor’s appointments were not so easy to arrange. As a child, he always dreamed of becoming a naturalist, but his family sent him to study in Warsaw, thinking he should pursue a more lucrative career. One day, while working as a window washer in the late 1980s, he saw a man working in an office constantly checking the time. He realized he wanted to pursue a career rooted in his passion for nature, so he started visiting herb shops in Warsaw, asking if they needed any herbs. When he returned to Podlasie to visit his family, he collected herbs and brought them to sell in Warsaw. This was the beginning of what is now the largest organic herbal business in Poland, Dary Natury. At first, the locals couldn’t believe that Mirosław wanted to stay in the region and develop this business. But as the business grew, Mirosław employed many more people in the local community and purchased more land, creating new organic niche products, including teas, juices and cosmetics, in addition to becoming a major producer of raw herbs used throughout Europe. He currently has over 350 employees and, perhaps even more impressively, he has amassed the largest private collection of herbs in all of Europe, which form the basis of his private botanical garden and agritourism “Ziołowy Zakątek”, which welcomes over 100,000 guests annually. This is a truly unique place that cannot be missed by anyone with a passion for ecology. In this film, Mirosław describes his humble beginnings, his passion for ecology and presents his company’s extensive production facilities. Part two will be devoted to his botanical garden, fields and laboratory.
In the second part of our visit to Ziołowy Zakątek, Mirosław Angielczyk, the founder, takes us on an exclusive and comprehensive tour of the daily operations of his company, over which he directly supervises. His decades of experience growing hundreds of different herbs in poor soils are unparalleled, making his presence on the farm essential and irreplaceable. He talks fascinatingly about the numerous plants growing in his vast botanical garden, fields and greenhouses. Discusses the important history of various buildings on the property, including the old windmill. He also shows us his laboratory, where all raw materials are tested to ensure the highest quality. It also talks about many complicated aspects of running such an extensive business based on ecologically sourced products in this dynamically changing world. She also shows us her new line of natural beauty products and her many farm animals, including pigs, sheep, goats, chickens and ducks. Time spent talking with Mr. Mirosław is always time well spent. Hopefully Jonathan will be invited to visit again soon!
Regenerative agriculture offers one of the greatest opportunities to help Europe address human and climate health, along with the financial well-being of farmers. The Regenerative Agriculture Revolution is a series of activities whose overall aim is to help farmers and agrifood businesses adopt more regenerative farming practices and raise public awareness about the important health, environmental and economic benefits of eating regeneratively produced food.
Spotkanie prowadzi Wojtek Mejor (Nyeleni Polska / Koalicja Żywa Ziemia), aktywista i edukator, współzałożyciel Ruchu Suwerenności Żywnościowej Nyeleni Polska. Agroekologia gospodarując na zaledwie 25% gruntów rolnych, nadal wytwarza 70% spożywanej na świecie żywności. Wyróżnia się podejściem holistycznym – postrzega ludzkość i jej system społeczno-gospodarczy w powiązaniu z szerszym ekosystemem. Dąży do skrócenie łańcucha systemu żywnościowego oraz lokalnej produkcji i konsumpcji żywności.
8. diskusia počas Agrokomplexu 2023 v pavilóne M3. Téma: Uhlíkové poľnohospodárstvo (Carbon farming) – bude to nový významný príjem pre poľnohospodárov? Ako na to? Ide viac o peniaze, alebo o pôdu? O zdravú pôdu? Na rovinu: peniaze naviac bez zdravej pôdy – bez uhlíka nebudú! Moderuje: Doc. RNDr. Ladislav Miko, PhD. Diskutujúci: Ing. Pavol Bezák, Ing. Téma prednášky: Regeneratívne poľnohospodárstvo – nástroj pre trvalo udržateľné poľnohospodárstvo Prednášajúci: Ľubomír Marhavý Biopratex s.r.o.
Európska komisia minulý rok predstavila dlhodobú potravinovú stratégiu Z farmy na stôl, ktorá má zásadným spôsobom prekopať celý poľnohospodársky a potravinový systém v EÚ. Jej zámerom je zaistiť, aby agropotravinárstvo takisto prispelo k plneniu cieľov Európskej zelenej dohody. Jedným z hlavných cieľov stratégie je väčšia podpora ekologického poľnohospodárstva. Do roku 2030 by ekofarmy mali tvoriť aspoň 25 percent poľnohospodárskej pôdy v EÚ.
